Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
